The combination of styles highlights the well-balanced beauty of marbles, paintings and decorations chosen from Gian Galeazzo Visconti, who in 1396 invited the most famous architects and artists of his age in Pavia. Have a look to the façade: on its pure white background mottled with old pink and green nuances the best sculptors and architects have written a rare page of the history of art. Angels, kings, saints, patriarchs and prophets are alternated with marble panels crowded with plastic figures, delicate, pleaded columns and polished pillars. On the highest part of the façade the abundance of decorations leaves space for an open small loggia that gives some freshness to the structure.

The history of Lodi is bound to the destruction of the ancient roman city Laus Pompieia in 1111. In April 1158 the city was destroyed again by the army of the Milan State. The beating heart of the old town is the squared Piazza della Vittoria. On its four sides you can admire important monuments which date back until the Middle Age.

The Tenuta Il Cigno is among the most important cycle routes of Northern Europe.

The Munich-Milan route goes from Munich to Milan, passing through the Brenner Pass or the Reschen Pass. This itinerary pass through cities like Bolzano, Trento, Rovereto and Riva del Garda. From here it is possible to get to Peschiera del Garda by ferry and then proceed towards Mantua, Cremona, Pavia, Vilanterio (“Tenuta Il Cigno”) and, finally, get to Milan. With the Deutsche Bahn train, it is possible to return to Munich passing through Verona, Trento, Bolzano, and Innsbruck

The second itinerary, that comes a few kilometers from out Tenuta il Cigno, is the Via Francigena, part of the Council of Europe’s European Cultural Routes program. This route is an ancient medieval path that goes from Canterbury to Rome, crossing France, Switzerland, and Italy.

In 600 BC already Lodi Vecchio was one of the first villages inhabited by the Celtic populations settled in the Po Valley. The surface of this area in the 16th century, period in which the village belonged to the State of Milan, represents the foundation of the current municipality. After the 2nd World War Lodi Vecchio went through a period of decisive changing both from the demographic and economic points of view.

In the 12th century this city belonged to the bishop’s estate of Lodi. Its propriety was then transferred to the Visconti family and in 1370 Regina della Scala, e.i. Bernabò’s wife, got a majestic castle built in this area. The castle is ever since the most considerable building of the village and figures amongst the best preserved fortresses of Lombardy. The castle now hosts the archaeological museum with paintings and pottery and the Lombard historic museum of agriculture.

The roots of San Colombano al Lambro are to find in the remote prehistory, when primitive ancestors settled on the marshy valleys on the two sides of the river Po.
